The American Medical Technologists (AMT), Medical Technologist (MT) is a mid-level credential. An MT performs complex chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriological analyses, including, microscopically examines blood and other body fluids; makes cultures of body fluid and tissue samples to determine the presence of bacteria, fungi, parasites, or other microorganisms; analyzes samples for chemical content or a chemical reaction and determines concentrations of compounds. Candidates must meet a combination of education and experience requirements to be considered eligible. Candidates must also pass a written examination.

Education/Training and/or Experience REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must have a baccalaureate degree in medical technology from a program or institution accredited by a recognized regional or national accreditation agency and have completed approved clinical laboratory experience.
- Candidates must have graduated from their degree program within the past five years. Candidates graduating longer than five years from the date of application must provide evidence of one year of full-time (or equivalent) approved laboratory experience within the last five years.
Candidates must have a baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a recognized regional or national accreditation agency, or an equivalent degree from a foreign institution as certified by a foreign transcript evaluation agency approved by AMT. Candidates must have completed an accredited medical laboratory technician (MLT) or a 50-week US MLT training program and have completed a minimum of one year of approved clinical laboratory experience.
Candidates must have taken and passed a generalist MT examination given by another certification organization or state licensure agency, provided that the examination has been approved by the AMT Board of Directors. Candidate's certification or state license must be active. Candidate must document recent education (within the last year) or employment (within the last five years), both as defined by AMT eligibility criteria. No exam is required.
