The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), Medical Laboratory Technician, MLT(ASCP) validates technicians knowledge of specific techniques and instruments and his ability to recognize factors that directly affect procedures and results. Medical Laboratory Technicians perform routine laboratory procedures on blood, tissue, and other bodily fluids using instruments such as microscopes, chemicals, computers, and complex laboratory equipment. They usually perform these duties under the supervision of a medical laboratory scientist, pathologist, or other professionals that specialize in biological sciences. This is a mid-level certification. Applicants must meet certain education and experience requirement. There are several routes to meet the requirement, all require an associates degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university and additional experience, training, or certification.

Education/Training and/or Experience REQUIREMENTS
Candidate must have an associate degree or at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a college/university accredited by a recognized regional or national accreditation agency, AND successful completion of a NAACLS or ABHES accredited MLT program within the last 5 years.
Route 2:
Candidate must have an associate degree or at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, including 6 semester hours (9 quarter hours) of chemistry and 6 semester hours (9 quarter hours) of biology, AND CLA(ASCP) certification.
CLA(ASCP) certification was discontinued in 1982. Only applicants previously certified CLA(ASCP) may apply under this route.
Candidate must have an associate degree or at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, including 6 semester hours (9 quarter hours) of chemistry and 6 semester hours (9 quarter hours) of biology, AND successful completion of a 50 week U.S. military medical laboratory training course within the last ten years.
Route 4:Candidate must have an associate degree or at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, including 6 semester hours (9 quarter hours) of chemistry and 6 semester hours (9 quarter hours) of biology AND three years full time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U.S., Canada or an accredited laboratory within the last ten years.
Other REQUIREMENTS
The Medical Laboratory Technician, MLT (ASCP) credential has the following other requirements:
- Active military personnel enrolled in the military Medical Laboratory Specialist course will be allowed to sit for the MLT (ASCP) certification examination within the last three weeks of Phase II training details can be obtained from ASCP Military Trained MLT applicants.
