American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), Medical Laboratory Technician [Generalist] (MLT) validates a medical technician's knowledge and ability to perform routine medical laboratory tests and recognize factors that directly affect procedures and results. Medical Laboratory Technicians perform routine laboratory procedures on blood, tissue, and other bodily fluids using instruments such as microscopes, chemicals, computers, and complex laboratory equipment. They usually perform these duties under the supervision of the Laboratory Director. To earn the MLT(AAB) certification, applicants must be a high school graduate or equivalent, satisfy one of the education/training and/or experience requirement options, document their laboratory training, and pass a written exam.

All applicants must be at least a High School graduate or equivalent. 

Additionally, applicants must meet one of the following training & education requirements:




Option 1:

Applicants must have completed a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by an organization approved by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Option 2:

Applicants must have earned an associate degree (or the equivalent) in a laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology, from an accredited institution. 

Note: The equivalent of an associate degree is defined as 60 semester hours, of which 24 semester hours are either medical laboratory technology courses OR six semester hours of chemistry; six semester hours of biology; and 12 semester hours of courses in chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination.

Option 3:

Applicants must have successfully completed an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures course of at least 50 weeks duration and earned the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician).

The Medical Laboratory Technician - Generalist (MLT ((AAB)) credential has the following other requirements:

  • Applicants must document laboratory training that includes one of the following options:
    • Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by ABHES, NAACLS (formerly CAHEA), or other accrediting agencies approved by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). (This training may be included in the 60 semester hours eligibility requirement option) OR
    • At least three months of documented laboratory training within the ten years immediately prior to the application date.

RECERTIFICATION

Medical Laboratory Technician - Generalist (MLT ((AAB))

Renewal Period: 1 year

The Medical Laboratory Technician - Generalist (MLT ((AAB)) credential has the following recertification information:

  • To recertify, MLT (AAB) certification holders must renew their AAB Associate Member Section (AMS) membership annually.
  • To maintain your certification, you MUST renew your AMS membership annually.

    AMS Registrant Class dues are $102 per year, and include maintenance of your ABOR certification and records. If your AMS membership is not renewed for (3) years, your certification file will be closed, and you would have to meet today's qualifications and re-apply and re-take the examination to become re-certified.

    As a benefit of your membership, ABOR will verify your certification for employers and potential employers for no charge. ABOR can only verify the certification of members in good standing (up-to-date on membership dues for that year).


    Continuing Education Units (CEU's)


    There is no CEU requirement to maintain your MLT (AAB)certification; however, some states may require CEUs to maintain your state licensure. Check with your state licensure board for details.

Additional considerations for the Medical Laboratory Technician - Generalist (MLT ((AAB)) include:

  • Once the MLT(AAB) application is processed, applicants receive a free membership in the AAB Associate Member Section (AMS).
