National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology, Diving Medical Technician (DMT). This mid-level certification. DMT focuses on recognition, stabilization and treatment of decompression and other diving-related injuries. These topics represent core items, as does the necessary invasive skills that permit optimal medical management. Additional course content includes decompression procedures, chamber operations, and marine life injuries. Region-specific topics such as cold water diving and tropical diving issues, altitude diving, represent optional material. An individual wishing to certify as a DMT through the NBDHMT approval process must complete a diver medic training course taught by an NBDHMT approved instructor and/ or facility.

You must meet all of the requirements:

  • You must have formal diving training.
  • You are required to have formal Emergency Medicine Training.
  • You should have completed Diving Medicine Course taught by NBDHMT approved instructors. The Naval Diving & Salvage Training center offers approved training course.

The Diving Medical Technician (DMT) credential has the following other requirements:

  • Application along with supporting documents should be sent to NBDHMT with applicable check or money order. Details can be obtained from the DMT Resource Manual.

Written Exam

  • Physics and Physiology (7.5%)
  • Decompression Sickness and Cerebral Arterial Gas Embolism (15%)
  • Patient Assessment (25%)
  • Recompression Treatment & Decompression Procedures (22.5%)
  • Invasive Procedures (10%)
  • Other Diving Related Injuries, Side Effects & Complications (15%)
  • Chamber, Equipment and Operational Safety (5%)

Practical Exam

Note: Instructor prepares for skills demonstrations and practice sessions.

  • Physical examinations:
    • an adequate emergency baseline assessment, obtain and evaluate vital signs, provide basic life support, properly use basic equipment such as pen light, stethoscope, blood pressure cuff
    • use of the otoscope in performing a simple ear exam
    • ability to keep adequate records of exams and treatments
  • Neurological exams:
    • the ability to do an adequate field neuro exam covering; state of consciousness and intellectual functions, cranial nerves, sensory function, motor function, and balance/coordination
    • ability to do exam inside and outside chamber and as follow-up to treatment
  • Sham treatments:
    • ability to elicit symptoms of simulated DCS or barotrauma case
    • ability to discover signs of same
    • ability to use basic medical kit and equipment properly, at surface and in chamber
    • ability to function smoothly at depth
    • ability to formulate and conduct a basic treatment plan, both as inside and outside tender
    • ability to keep adequate records and make accurate reports to a diving physician or other higher authority
    • ability to observe and maintain proper oxygen limits, recognize and manage simulated symptoms of toxicity

RECERTIFICATION

Diving Medical Technician (DMT)

Renewal Period: 2 years

The Diving Medical Technician (DMT) credential has the following recertification information:

  • The DMT is renewed every 2 years; renewal requires earning continuing education units and paying a fee.

Additional considerations for the Diving Medical Technician (DMT) include:

  • An individual wishing to become a certified Advanced Diver Medic Technician through NBDHMT must satisfy all of the requirements listed above plus show documented evidence that they have also received instruction in advanced invasive techniques and procedures, including airway management (endotracheal intubation), nasogastric tubes, intravenous and intramuscular injections, Foley catherization and suturing. Navy training meets this requirement.
