The National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) is an entry-level certification for clinical team members at hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, and blood donor centers. A Phlebotomy Technician is a health care professional responsible for the collection and handling of blood specimens used in diagnosing and tracking illnesses, drug testing, or other health-related areas requiring a blood sample. Candidates must take a written exam.

Candidate must have a high school diploma or an equivalent (if documents are not in English, a translation into English from a translation service approved in the United States for legal or government documents must be available upon request).

Candidates must be able to provide evidence that he/she has successfully performed a minimum of 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary sticks on live individuals.

Option 1:

Training Program - Candidates must successfully complete a training program in the health field covered by the NHA certification exam offered by an accredited or state-recognized institution or provider.

Option 2:

Military - Formal medical services training in the health field covered by the NHA certification exam offered by any branch of the U.S. Military fulfills the Training Program.

Option 3:

Candidates must have at least one one year of supervised work experience in the health field covered by the NHA certification exam within the past three years.

Note: Candidates whose date of graduation or completion from their training program is five years or more prior to the date of application, must have relevant work experience.

The NHA-Certified Phlebotomy Technician (NHA-CPT) credential has the following other requirements:

  • Candidates certified by the NHA are expected to abide by and follow the NHA Code of Ethics.

  • Patient Preparation
    • Conduct appropriate introduction to the patient
    • Explain the phlebotomy procedure to be performed to the patient
    • Review the requisition for testing requirements and patient identity
    • Receive implied or informed consent from the patient
    • Positively identify the patient
    • Determine appropriate site for sample requirement
    • Select a site that minimizes patient risk
    • Determine venipuncture site accessibility based on patient age and condition
    • Apply appropriate antiseptic agent using aseptic technique
    • Verify patient compliance with testing requirements (e.g., fasting, medication, basal state)
  • Collection Techniques
    • Primary Collections
    • Special Collections
  • Processing
    • Label all specimens
    • Perform quality control for CLIA-waived procedures
    • Transport specimens based on handling requirements (e.g.,temperature, light, time)
    • Explain non-blood, specimen collection procedures to patients (e.g., stool, urine, semen, sputum)
    • Handle patient-collected, non-blood specimens
    • Avoid pre-analytical errors when collecting blood specimens (e.g., QNS, hemolysis)
    • Adhere to chain of custody guidelines when required (e.g., forensic studies, blood alcohol, drug screen)
    • Prepare samples for transportation to a reference (outside) laboratory
    • Coordinate communication between non-laboratory personnel for processing and collection
    • Use technology to input and retrieve specimen data
    • Report critical values for point of care testing
    • Distribute laboratory results to ordering providers
  • Safety and Compliance Considerations
    • Adhere to regulations regarding workplace safety (e.g., OSHA, NIOSH)
    • Adhere to regulations regarding operational standards (e.g., JCAHO, CLSI)
    • Adhere to HIPAA regulations regarding Protected Health Information (PHI)
    • Follow exposure control plans in the event of occupational exposure
    • Follow transmission based precautions (e.g., iatrogenic, airborne, droplet, contact)
    • Wear personal protective equipment while following standard precautions (e.g., gloves, gowns, masks, shoe covers)
    • Sanitize hands to prevent the spread of infections
    • Initiate first aid when necessary
    • Initiate CPR when necessary
