Academy of Applied Personal Training Education (AAPTE) Certified Personal Fitness Trainers-Exercise and Fitness Specialists (CPT-EFS) are fitness professionals proficient in the understanding of client assessment, exercise program design, physiology of human performance, biomechanics, nutrition, medical considerations and terminology, effective communication, and personal training ethics. The CFT-EFS exam assesses a candidate's essential knowledge in the exercise sciences and the application of the sciences in training the general population. Candidates must be at least 18 years old or a high school graduate, complete a human anatomy course or have active status NCCA accredited Personal Training Certification, and hold current CPR/AED certification.

Candidate must complete a human anatomy course or have an active status NCCA accredited Personal Training Certification.

The Certified Personal Fitness Trainer-Exercise and Fitness Specialist (CPT-EFS) credential has the following other requirements:

  • Candidate must be at least 17 years old or a high school graduate.

Written Exam

  • Fundamental Knowledge (Anatomy, Physiology, Nutrition, Biomechanics, Kinesiology) (25%)
    • Understand Anatomy and Physiology of Movement.
    • Understand the process by which energy is utilized during aerobic and anaerobic metabolism.
    • Understand the structures of anatomy and the acute and chronic physiological adaptations that occur through an exercise stimulus.
    • Understand the sciences associated with resistance training biomechanics.
    • Understand the fundamental components of nutrition and applying methods to determine caloric requirements.
  • Health Screening and Client Assessment (21%)
    • Conduct a client consultation and Health Screening Process.
    • Interpret pre-screening forms in order to identify and classify Risk(s).
    • Consult with or refer the client to the appropriate healthcare professional to obtain medical clearance and/or exercise parameters.
    • Objectively determine fitness capacity to accomplish a task or exercise through baseline assessments.
  • Exercise Prescription, Programming and Implementation (22%)
    • Create an Appropriate Individualized Exercise Prescription (A.I.E.P)
    • Apply exercise parameters, Frequency, Intensity, Time, and Type (F.I.T.T. Principle) as they relate to creating an appropriate individual exercise program.
    • Select exercise modalities and manipulation of training variables in order to gain desired adaptations.
    • Implement an Appropriate Individualized Exercise Prescription (AIEP).
    • Understand flexibility, stretching and joint range of motion.
    • Avoidance, identification and intervention regarding an overtraining client.
  • Resistance Training Biomechanics, Exercise Technique and Programming Modification (22%)
    • Understand the principles of creating a resistance training exercise from a mechanical perspective.
    • Analyze an exercise relative to risk and benefit.
    • Understand muscular and skeletal considerations relative to exercise mechanics.
    • Monitor exercise technique and response to exercise stimulus, and modify as necessary.
    • Modify an exercise to achieve a mechanically efficient resistance training exercise.
    • Evaluate clients’ progress and exercise prescription to determine if an adjustment of goals and/or the exercise prescription is necessary and if program modifications are required.
  • Ethical Responsibilities and Scope of Practice (10%)
    • Adhere to AAPTE’s scope of practice, responsibility, professionalism, confidentiality and standard of ethics.
    • Understand the psychology of exercise.
    • Understand the importance of establishing credibility through effective business management.
    • Understand safety concerns and emergency response procedures.

Certified Personal Fitness Trainer-Exercise and Fitness Specialist (CPT-EFS)

Renewal Period: 2 years

The Certified Personal Fitness Trainer-Exercise and Fitness Specialist (CPT-EFS) credential has the following recertification information:

  • CPT-EFS certification holders must renew their certification every two years. A minimum of fifteen (15.0) Continuing Education Credits (CECs) must be completed within the two (2) year certification period. A minimum of five (5) CECs must be obtained directly from the AAPTE.
