The Association of Legal Administrators (ALA), Certified Legal Manager (CLM) credential is an intermediate level certification for professional legal office managers. CLMs provide office management support; they supervise work in legal offices. CLMs are expected to have competence in financial management and accounting, human resources management and development, office services management, information systems management, and an awareness of trends in the legal industry. Candidates for the CLM are required to meet educational, experiential, and ethical qualifications and they must pass an exam.

Education REQUIREMENTS
Candidates are required to have at least 2 hours of coursework in the following areas:
- Writing Skills
- Communication Skills
- Self-Management Skills
- Information Technology
- Organizational Development
Coursework may be completed in any of the competencies or combination of competencies that comprise the category. The CLM Certification Program Information and Application Packet provides details about competencies and categories. A maximum of four (4) hours can be obtained in an interactive technology-based self-study program.
Candidates who have functional specialties (HR, Finance, Facilities, etc.) must complete an additional 15 hours of coursework in designated areas other than their field of specialty.
Experience REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must be currently involved in the full-time work of managing a legal organization, such as a private law firm, legal clinic, governmental agency, corporate legal department or court system, or have been working in such full-time employment within 24 months of the date of application.
Candidates who are principal administrators must have at least three years of experience as an exempt-level principal administrator or as a branch office manager of a law firm or law office.
Candidates who are functional specialists, such as the manager of Human Resources, Finance, Facilities, Information Systems or Marketing, must have at least five years of experience, three of which must be in a supervisory position.
