The International Board for Certification of Safety Managers (IBFCSM), Certified Healthcare Emergency Professional (CHEP) certification is for individuals that work in or support healthcare emergency and disaster efforts. Candidates for the CHEP include emergency directors, safety managers, facility management personnel, nurses, administrative leaders, and other healthcare personnel work and supporting real world issues within the healthcare and public sectors. Candidates can qualify for the CHEP certification on a professional or an associate level. Professional level candidates must have eight (8) years of education and experience combined with at least three (3) years of relevant experience; or the candidate must hold a Bachelor's or Graduate degree in a safety or related discipline and provide documentation for at least two (2) years of relevant experience. Associate level candidates must document four years of education and experience combined with at least one year of relevant experience. Candidates are required to take and pass a written examination.

Education and/or Experience REQUIREMENTS

Professional Level:

  • Candidate must have any combination of relevant experience and college education to equal eight (8) years. Candidate must document at least three (3) years of relevant experience. Each 30 semester hours of college credit earned can be substituted for one year of experience for a maximum of three years.

OR

  • Candidate must have a Bachelor's degree or a Graduate degree in a safety or related discipline along with documentation of at least two (2) years of relevant experience.

Associate Level:

  • Candidate must have at least four (4) years of relevant experience and education combined with at least one (1) year of verifiable experience unless candidate has a Bachelor's or Graduate degree in a safety or related discipline.


Note: Associate level members may upgrade to the professional level when meeting published requirements. Associate level members are not required to re-take the examination to upgrade. Those desiring to upgrade must send written request to the Board and pay the current upgrade fee.

RECERTIFICATION

Certified Healthcare Emergency Professional (CHEP)

Renewal Period: 1 year

The Certified Healthcare Emergency Professional (CHEP) credential has the following recertification information:

  • The CHEP certification is renewable every five years requiring completion and documentation of a total of 50 CEUs or 10 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) annually. Certification holders must also submit evidence of 1,500 hours of professional practice in the scope or field of certification annually, or 7,500 hours every five years. A recertification fee must also be paid.
