The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), Technologist in Chemistry (C(ASCP)) certification is for laboratory professionals who possess knowledge and skills in the areas of general chemistry, proteins and enzymes, acid-base, blood gases, and electrolytes, hormones and vitamins, toxicology and therapeutic drug monitoring, instrumentation and analytical techniques, and laboratory operations. To earn the C(ASCP) certification, applicants must meet education and/or experience requirements and pass a written exam.

Education and/or Experience REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must satisfy the requirements of at least one of the following routes:

Route 1:

Applicants must have an ASCP Medical Technologist (MT)/Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS(ASCP)) certification AND a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university.

Route 2:

Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a major in biological science or chemistry, or a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology, chemistry and/or medical science AND one year of full time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in chemistry in the U.S., Canada or an accredited laboratory within the last five years.

Route 3:

Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a major in biological science or chemistry, or a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology, chemistry and/or medical science AND successful completion of a structured program in chemistry under the auspices of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited Medical Laboratory Scientist Program within the last five years. The structured program in chemistry must be equivalent to the curriculum for chemistry in the Medical Laboratory Scientist Program. Route 3 applicants should not apply until after successful completion of the structured program.

Route 4:

Applicants must have a master’s degree in chemistry or an appropriately related field, from a regionally accredited college/university AND six months of full time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in chemistry in the U.S., Canada or an accredited laboratory within the last five years.

Route 5:

Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree or post baccalaureate degree in medical laboratory science from a regionally accredited college/university, or a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) in the biological, chemical and/or medical sciences AND successful completion of a program accredited by NAACLS as a Medical Laboratory Scientist Program within the last five years.

Note: An accredited laboratory refers to CMS CLIA certificate of registration, compliance, accreditation; or JCI accreditation; or Accreditation under ISO 15189.

RECERTIFICATION

Technologist in Chemistry (C(ASCP))

Renewal Period: 3 years

The Technologist in Chemistry (C(ASCP)) credential has the following recertification information:

  • The C(ASCP) certification is renewed every three years by accumulating 36 Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) points, completing the CMP online declaration process, and paying a fee.

    The CMP points must include one point in laboratory or patient safety (i.e., quality control, quality assurance) and two points in chemistry. The remaining points can be in the area(s) of lab specialty, management, education, or other related laboratory areas of interest.
