The Association of Boards of Certification (ABC), Biological Industrial Waste Operator - Class I is an entry-level biological wastewater treatment operator certification. Candidates for Class I must have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and one year of relevant work experience. Individuals who do not meet the requirements may still be eligible based on experience and other criteria. Candidates must also pass an examination, demonstrating knowledge of core competencies for biological industrial waste operators.

ABC requires that applicants for Class I certifications hold a High School Diploma or its equivalent; on a case-by-case basis the agency will consider a candidate that does not meet this requirement.

ABC requires that Class I applicants have one year of acceptable experience.

    • To include knowledge of the following: Check speed of equipment, inspect equipment for abnormal conditions, measure head loss, measure temperature of equipment, read charts, read meters, and read pressure gauges
    • Perform diagnostic and preventive maintenance on:blowers and compressors, chemical feeders, drives, instrumentation, motors, pumps and valves
    • Perform corrective maintenance on: chemical feeders, drives, instrumentation, motors, pumps, and valves

The Biological Industrial Waste Operator - Class I credential has the following recertification information:

  • The Biological Industrial Waste Operator – Class I certification is valid for two years. Certification holders must complete 24 hours of continuing education approved by ABC. For more information, see the ABC Renewal page.
