Candidates are required to have a license or certificate in psychology at the independent practice level by the State, Province, or Territory of the U.S. or Canada in which the psychologist practices. Exceptions to the residency requirement are made for active duty federal uniformed service psychologists when practicing in those roles.

Candidates for the ABPP Board Certified Specialist in Psychoanalysis must hold a doctoral degree in professional psychology conferred by the American Psychological Association (APA), Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), or other ABPP-approved institution. Candidates credentialed in the most recent directory of the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology, the Canadian Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology, or the Certificate of Professional Qualification in Psychology (CPQ) (ASPPB) qualify as meeting the doctoral degree requirements.

Candidates are required to have experience that includes the supervised analysis of a minimum of two patients for a minimum of two years, and personal analysis.

Candidates for the ABPP Board Certified Specialist in Psychoanalysis must meet one of the following criteria: 

  • Completion of a program from a recognized postdoctoral psychoanalytic training institute OR
  • Organized postdoctoral program in psychoanalysis OR
  • Education and training secured through a planned, individualized sequence of education, supervision, and practice acceptable to the American Board and Academy of Psychoanalysis (ABAPsa) AND
  • Demonstration of acceptable evidence that following education and training in psychoanalysis of a practice in psychoanalysis. The candidate’s practice includes a sufficient number of cases in psychoanalysis.

The Board Certified Specialist in Psychoanalysis in Psychology credential has the following other requirements:

  • For any of the education and training option qualifications selected by the candidate, the course of education and training must be verifiable and consist of at least a minimum of three years of organized study in psychoanalysis, supervised analyses of a minimum of two patients for a minimum of two years, and a personal analysis.
  • Candidates for the ABPP Board Certified Specialist in Psychoanalysis must have internship experience that meets the following criteria:
    • Lasted no less than 9 months or no more than 24 months
    • Consisted of a minimum of 1,500 hours with at least 600 hours in a psychoanalysis setting
    • Appeared in a list approved by the –
      • APA/CPA, or
      • Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) directory, or
      • The National Canadian,
      • The National Registers, or
      • Is documented as part of the requirements of an accredited professional psychology training program in psychoanalysis.
