The American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP), Board Certified Specialist in Couple and Family Psychology (CFP) credential is an advanced-level certification for Couple and Family Psychologists. Couple and Family Psychology is a general professional psychology specialty. Couple and Family Psychologists assess and treat psychological health and pathology issues, including affective, cognitive, behavioral, and dynamic factors for individuals, couples, families, and larger social systems. Candidates for the CFP credential must meet educational, experiential, training and other requirements, and must also pass the exam.

Credential Pre-requisite REQUIREMENTS
Candidates are required to have a license or certificate in psychology at the independent practice level by the State, Province, or Territory of the U.S. or Canada in which the psychologist practices. Exceptions to the residency requirement are made for active duty federal uniformed service psychologists when practicing in those roles.
Education REQUIREMENTS
Candidates are required to hold a doctoral degree, Ph.D. or Psy.D. in psychology that meets the standards set by the American Board of Couple and Family Psychology (ABCFP). For information about the standards set by the ABCFP see the Couple and Family Psychology Candidate Manual.
Experience REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must complete a post-doctoral residency or one-year postdoctoral practice supervised by a licensed psychologist. A minimum of one hour a week of individual supervision for 48 weeks is mandatory. Additional supervision or consultation in the specialty is desirable.
Education and/or Experience REQUIREMENTS
Candidates are required to complete one graduate course in Couple and Family Psychology or equivalent and at least 40 hours of continuing education (CE) in CFP. Continuing education must be completed in the specific areas of CFP competency. Satisfaction of this requirement or equivalency will be determined on a case by case basis. The CE activities must be completed within five (5) contiguous years (time frame from one to five years) prior to the ABPP application.
Other REQUIREMENTS
The Board Certified Specialist in Couple and Family Psychology (CFP) credential has the following other requirements:
- Candidates are required to provide a professional statement in which they describe their professional training, experience, and identification with CFP. The professional statement should highlight the candidate’s specific training and background in the area of CFP. The board recommends no more than 2,500 words.
