The American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP), Board Certified Specialist in Clinical Neuropsychology credential is an advanced-level certification for Clinical Neuropsychologists. Clinical Neuropsychologists have specialized knowledge and training in the applied science of brain-behavior relationships. Clinical Neuropsychologists use this knowledge in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients who have developmental, neurological, medical, or psychiatric conditions. Clinical Neuropsychologists employ psychological and behavioral methods to evaluate patients’ cognitive and emotional strengths and weaknesses and relate these findings to normal and abnormal central nervous system functioning. Clinical Neuropsychologists use this information, in conjunction with information provided by family members and other medical/healthcare providers, to identify and diagnose neurobehavioral disorders, conduct research, counsel patients and their families, or plan and implement intervention strategies. Candidates for the ABPP Board Certified Specialist in Clinical Neuropsychology credential must meet educational, experiential, training and other requirements, and must also pass the exam.

Credential Pre-requisite REQUIREMENTS
Candidates are required to have a license or certificate in psychology at the independent practice level by the State, Province, or Territory of the U.S. or Canada in which the psychologist practices. Exceptions to the residency requirement are made for active duty federal uniformed service psychologists when practicing in those roles.
Education REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in professional psychology conferred by the American Psychological Association (APA), Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), or other ABPP-approved institution.
Experience REQUIREMENTS
Candidates for the Board Certified Specialist in Clinical Neuropsychology must have three years of experience, of which two years must be supervised experience in Clinical Neuropsychology. One year of supervision may be pre-doctoral. Acceptable supervision is defined as one hour of face-to-face supervision on a weekly basis for a minimum of 40 hours per year. Supervision is expected to be a weekly or semi-weekly event, conducted in units of one hour or more per session.
Education/Training and/or Experience REQUIREMENTS
Postdoctoral residency education and training are required; this requirment aims to develop an advanced level of competence in the specialty of clinical neuropsychology. Candidates for the ABPP Board Certified Specialist in Clinical Neuropsychology must have internship experience that is either a one-year full-time or two-year half-time internship program that meets one of the following criteria:
- Accredited by the APA or CPA OR
- Listed in the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) Directory for the year the internship was completed, OR
- The applicant is listed in the National Register of Health Service Psychologists (NRHSPP) or Canadian Register of Health Service Psychologists (CRHSPP) Directory or holds the Certificate of Professional Qualification in Psychology (CPQ).
