The American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP), Board Certified Specialist in Clinical Health Psychology credential is an advanced-level certification for Clinical Health Psychologists. Clinical Health Psychologists apply scientific knowledge of the inter-relationships among behavioral, emotional, cognitive, social, and biological components in health and disease to the promotion and maintenance of health; the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of illness and disability; and the improvement of the health care system. Clinical Health Psychologists work in academic medical centers, hospitals, private practice, outpatient clinics, academia, government settings, and administrative offices. Clinical Health Psychologists often engage in research, practice, and teaching clinical health psychology. Candidates must meet educational, experiential, training and other requirements, and must also pass the exam.

Candidates are required to have a license or certificate in psychology at the independent practice level by the State, Province, or Territory of the U.S. or Canada in which the psychologist practices. Exceptions to the residency requirement are made for active duty federal uniformed service psychologists when practicing in those roles.

Candidates for the ABPP Board Certified Specialist in Clinical Health Psychology must hold a doctoral degree in professional psychology conferred by the American Psychological Association (APA), Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), or other ABPP-approved institution.

Candidates for the ABPP Board Certified Specialist in Clinical Health Psychology can apply for certification after two postdoctoral years upon successful completion of either:

  • An APA or CPA accredited postdoctoral fellowship in an area other than clinical health psychology if at least 50% of the training was in clinical health psychology, and one additional postdoctoral year of clinical health psychology experience, OR
  • A non-accredited but Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) listed clinical health psychology fellowship and one additional postdoctoral year of clinical health psychology experience, OR
  • Apply for certification after three postdoctoral years including a one-year postdoctoral supervised experience in professional psychology, and two additional years of post-doctoral experience in clinical health psychology.

Candidates for the ABPP Board Certified Specialist in Clinical Health Psychology can apply for certification after two postdoctoral years upon successful completion of either:

  • An APA or CPA accredited postdoctoral fellowship in an area other than clinical health psychology if at least 50% of the training was in clinical health psychology, and one additional postdoctoral year of clinical health psychology experience, OR
  • A non-accredited but APPIC listed clinical health psychology fellowship and one additional postdoctoral year of clinical health psychology experience, OR
  • Apply for certification after three postdoctoral years including a one-year postdoctoral supervised experience in professional psychology, and two additional years of post-doctoral experience in clinical health psychology.

The Board Certified Specialist in Clinical Health Psychology credential has the following other requirements:

  • Candidates for the ABPP Board Certified Specialist in Clinical Health Psychology must have internship experience that is either a one-year full-time or two-year half-time internship program that meets one of the following criteria, is:
    • Accredited by the APA or CPA OR
    • Listed in the APPIC Directory for the year the internship was completed, OR
    • The applicant is listed in the National Register of Health Service Psychologists (NRHSPP) or Canadian Register of Health Service Psychologists (CRHSPP) Directory or holds the Certificate of Professional Qualification in Psychology (CPQ).
